Epic by Luminess Air - Airbrush Makeup System - review, before & after pics

Hello, Beautiful!

Some of you may remember my review on the first Luminess Airbrush Makeup System I ever tried, and that was back in February of 2012. Since then, Luminess Air has come out with some new airbrush makeup systems, including the one I'm featuring in this post: Epic Airbrush Makeup System. Technology meets airbrush makeup, bringing this system into the digital age.

Check out all the product info, along with my full review, after the pics!

Luminess Air Epic Airbrush Makeup System Info & Review:
Cost/Availability: $449.00 - Available on the Luminess Air website.
My Rating: 4 out of 5 Kisses

Product Info...

Epic by Luminess Air is a game changing breakthrough where beauty meets the digital age. Applying makeup will never be the same! Epic features a built in display, easy to use interface and many tutorial videos which allows you to have your very own personal makeup artist teaching you the unbelievably simple art of airbrush makeup. Epic also delivers the finest, most flawless makeup application possible.

Starter kit includes: four 0.55 oz foundations, Primer, Bronzer, Blush and Glow.

The kit I received did not include the bronzer, and the foundations were 0.25 oz. That could very well be because I was sent his system for review and they will include the larger sized foundations, as well as the bronzer in the actual Epic kit.

My Review...

Since I already have one airbrush system from Luminess Air, that's exactly what I compared it to and also tried to look it from a new consumer's point of view.

First off, let's talk about the one huge difference that makes this airbrush system different from any others out there right now: The built in display! This built in display can make the entire system beyond worth it for any new beginner to airbrush makeup. While the last kit did come with a how-to DVD, there is no need for that with this kit, as everything you'd need to know is already built into the system through the display. You also receive a "Getting Started Guide" which outlines plenty of instructions and tips as well.

Aside from that major difference, the differences are slim from the other Luminess Air Airbrush System I own. This still has just one speed on the compressor, which is perfectly fine for the everyday person (make up artists would want one with multiple speeds). The airbrush works great and just like the other one.

The system itself has a more sleek and high-end look, and it's nice and compact for storage in a drawer (where I keep mine when I'm not using it - as I have what seems to be a billion makeup drawers; CLICK HERE to see my latest set-up through my Instagram photo) or on your vanity.

The foundation I received is their Ultra Airbrush Foundation, which is mineral based and is oil, alcohol and preservative free. It's long wearing and has a natural glowing finish. I do find that I need to set-it with a powder, but that's just my preference and because I have combo skin - which leans more oily. They do offer a Matte Foundation, so that may be something for those oily gals to look into if they are making the investment.

You'll get four shades so you can customize it exactly to your color match needs. Which is wonderful because in the summer you may be darker than you are in the winter, which allows more versatility from this kit.

With this airbrush makeup system you can get full coverage, which I was originally shocked by when I first tried out Luminess Air. You can go back to that post and see my before & after's there, along with some more swatches of the foundation (since this time I didn't do a good job at doing that and I also forgot to swatch the Glow).

You can also get sheer coverage, light coverage, medium coverage... and even cover up tattoo's! It's all in the technique and taking the time to do so. It's not a fast process, as you need to wait for each layer to dry before applying the next. The drying doesn't take too long though, but you do need to build it up to get full coverage. One trick that I do is spot correcting. Spot correcting will help you achieve a flawless look with less layers. It's like applying a concealer, except you're just holding the airbrush closer. I did a before/after spot correcting/after photo on my last post of Luminess Air - so go check that out if you want to see how that works out.

Keep in mind if you don't layer it correctly the foundation can look and feel like a masque. It's about thin, even layers and before you know it you'll have a flawless face!

The blush is a pretty color and you can get a really natural result from it, but if done incorrectly you'll look like a clown. I still prefer my powder blushes to an airbrush blush, but it's there for you if you want it.

The glow is actually really pretty, and I prefer to mix in a drop or two with some foundation to make it a bit more natural looking. It's very pale yellow on its own and could look weird or noticeable if layered too heavily, so if you're finding you're having trouble getting it to look good just mix in some foundation drops!

The primer is just okay for me; I don't really like to use their primer - I don't know why, I just think I know what primers work for my skin and which don't. It's not that their primer doesn't work but I don't think it's the ideal primer for me. For my before & after pics I did NOT use a primer.

So now let's talk about that price point.... $449 is quite the investment, but it's all in your budget and how much you value the item. Some people will find it invaluable to have the built in display, as it's like having your own makeup artist and trouble shooting team right at the push of your fingertips. For those people, the $449 price tag is justifiable. It's also justifiable if you're going to use the Luminess Air skincare -- which I was also sent for review and will do a separate post once I have time to test that out a bit longer.

Basically, Luminess Air packaged the perfect beginner's kit because you have everything you need in one, and there is no running to the TV and DVD player to play the instruction DVD; you simply use your Epic Airbrush Makeup System. Plus, no wi-fi needed - all the tutorials, tips and tricks are built right in! Perfect for those of us that live where wi-fi just doesn't exist or is spotty.

However, on the opposite side of that spectrum, for those that already own and use Luminess Air Airbrush Systems, the built in display may become not needed. Sure, it's a wonderful tool and I was so excited to play with it, but once you know what you're doing the built in display becomes pretty useless, unless you run into a problem and need to consult the display to find out how to fix whatever problem it may be.

I will say that for the price I wish the system allowed you to plug up your phone and play music or something. At least then, when you don't need to use the display you can still take use of the system as a whole.

I don't think I'd recommend this to anyone who has used an airbrush machine for awhile now and knows what they are doing. But I'd definitely recommend this to anyone new to airbrushing and who wants to learn. It is an investment, but people spend that much money or more on the newest phone, latest handbag, a pair of shoes, even hair extensions - so it's all a personal perspective and how valuable it is to you personally.

  1. Great review. I have an earlier model luminess air. I solely use it for tanning now. After your review I'll keep my current compressor.
